The concept of holistic living is not a new one, people have been living like this since the beginning of time, it has been the past 50 or so years that things have started shifting with our ‘busy’ lifestyles. Living a holistic lifestyle is meant to heal and maintain a healthy body, mind, and spirit naturally. We want to make conscious choices for a healthier life which includes ourselves and our environment. People are becoming more conscious of what we are putting into and onto our bodies, and are being more mindful of the environment around us and what we are doing to it.
Holistic Health can be defined as an approach to life; it considers the whole person and how we interact with our environment. Holistic health emphasizes the connection of mind, body, and spirit, focusing on the health of the entire body and mind and not just parts of the body.
When I started to see and feel the difference in myself with the changes I was making in my diet, I then wanted to study other areas of my life and what I was doing that could be beneficial for myself.
One day I opened up my cabinet in my washroom to look for a hair product and I had a hard time finding it with all the different bottles I had. I realized that I was being pulled in by the media and their advertising gimmicks… “this cream will make your skin softer, this spray will make your hair shinier, this cream will do this,” and so on and so on.
I realized that I have bought and used these products for years and I never noticed my hair any shinier or my skin any softer.
Then I started to read skin and hair product labels like my food labels. What was in this stuff? The list was huge, and most of the things I couldn’t even pronounce! So I decided to start shopping in the health section and buy a ‘natural’ product. But I still had to dig out my glasses to read the labels; I realized that there were still lots of extra ingredients in those face creams too. Yes, it didn’t have parabens which we know are bad for us and yes, it wasn’t tested on animals, as it so boldly advertised, but it still had unrecognizable ingredients.
Last week I referred to a quote by Michael Pollan “If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.”
So I am going to use that quote and also say “If it came from a plant, put it on your skin; if it was made in a plant, don’t”!
Remember that our skin is our largest organ, and what we put
I started to get more educated on our skin and what is best for it. I took an Aromatherapy course and I took online courses including completing a Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products.
Here at Body Solace Studio we make all natural skin care products from scratch, in our little kitchen, no laboratory, and because they are all the products I make and use myself, I know what is going on my skin, and that it’s natural ingredients that came from plants.

Anti-Aging Day Cream
Avocado Oil is rich in vitamins E and D, so it is well absorbed. It’s healing and nourishing, it encourages skin cell regeneration and has a wonderful soft, silky feel on the skin.
Macadamia Nut Oil is rejuvenating and easily absorbed. It’s excellent for anti-aging and anti-wrinkle due to its high content of palmitic acid which slows the ageing process. And because it’s rich in Oleic acid, it helps assist with skin cell regeneration and is softening, smoothing and moisturizing.
Rosehip Oil is best known as regenerating, rejuvenating, and healing. It is light and non-greasy, and is quickly absorbed. Rosehip seed oil contains vitamin A which helps to repair damaged skin, acne, and reduce wrinkles and scars. One of the best oils for mature skin, it is a good source of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6) which assist with skin regeneration. It’s rich in Linolenic acid which helps with UV damage, fine lines and wrinkles and in Vitamin C and Beta carotene both of which are antioxidants.
Frankincense essential oil is one of the most important oils for aging skin as it is cytophylactic which means it regenerates skin cells. Frankincense tones and rejuvenates; it’s one of the most important oils for improving skin tone and treating aging skin, as well as reducing scar tissue.
Ylang Ylang essential oil is balancing and has a blissful aroma. It’s sensuous and calming. It can also be useful for treating anxiety, depression, stress and tension.
Anti-Aging Night Cream
Avocado Oil is excellent for all skin types and is most commonly known for its ability to soften, soothe, and recondition the skin.
Argan oil is great for dry and maturing skin, it is rich in vitamin E, very protective and helps keep skin supple.
Calendula is a very effective flower that makes for an excellent base for creams, salves and facial recipes. It is cooling and gentle on the skin, an infusion gives a soothing effect to the anti-aging wrinkle cream and is very useful for any dry or flakiness within the skin.
Frankincense essential oil will help to slow down the appearance of wrinkles and maybe even help to reduce the extent of the wrinkles you already have.
Lemon essential oil helps to banish facial wrinkles, clears the skin and helps to boost circulation. Lemon has a brightening effect on shallow skin, and a mild bleaching effect on age spots that can restore the tone back to your skin, giving it a more youthful look and feel.
By taking the steps to decrease the toxic load on our bodies, we are doing ourselves a favor and moving towards living a Holistic Lifestyle.
